Typhoon Meranti led to the death of one person in Taiwan, while 44 others were left injured. It also cut off the power supply to nearly one million homes while disrupting water supply to 700,000 homes. The typhoon caused torrential rains and winds of up to 370 kilometers per hour.

According to Al Jazeera, the storm led to the cancellation of various flights and train services. This caused major inconvenience as the disruption in the services coincided with the start of the three-day mid-autumn festival holiday. The typhoon caused the cancellation of more 140 trains bound for southeastern China.

Meranti also collapsed an 800 years old bridge from the Song dynasty. The bridge was located in Yongchun County of Fujian.

Yahoo News reported the typhoon is the most powerful to hit Fujian province in the past 67 years. The typhoon is expected to lose strength as it goes inland. It was a Category 5 typhoon, which is the highest classification given by Tropical Store Risk storm tracker. However, since it made landfall in mainland China, it's risk classification has been lowered to Category 2.

Chinese meteorologists now classify Meranti as a tropical depression, down from its previous classification of a super typhoon. It is the strongest typhoon to hit China since Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
