Shanghai SIPG is having a troubled season so far as they were recently eliminated in the quarterfinals of this season's AFC Champions League tournament by Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. The South Korean club thrashed them in the second leg of their matchup, 5-0, as they bowed out of Asia's premier club tourney.

To make matters worse, they are currently out of the Chinese first division domestic league's top three teams that would qualify to next season's ACL competitions, which reportedly put head coach Sven-Göran Eriksson's job in jeopardy.

The good news, though, is they still have a chance to earn one as they are tied with third-place squad Shanghai Shenhua with 42 points in the overall standings and both clubs still has five games to go before their season ends.

To start their way to redemption, SIPG nipped Hangzhou Greentown, 2-1, at the Yellow Dragon Sports Center last Sunday, as per Cri English.

Meanwhile, Guangzhou is close to claiming their sixth consecutive CSL title after crushing Liaoning Whowin, 6-2, in their match at the Tianhe Stadium also last Sunday, Xinhuanet reported.

The Southern China Tigers are six points ahead of their closest pursuers, Jiangsu Suning, and if they can continue their consistent form in the last few rounds then the crown will be their again this year.

Head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is said to be confident that he will lead the team to its second straight championship under his care, but is also aware that there should be no room for brashness.
