Bai comes with a two-year reprieve. Suspended death sentences are often reduced to life imprisonment in China after two years. Bai has held several senior positions in the party including the post of party chief in Yunnan until 2011. He was also a top official in Qinghai province. He has admitted to his crimes and stated his regret.

The Anyang City Intermediate Court said that Bai had accepted a massive amount of bribe and that his crimes were very serious in nature. His case went to trial in June. Bai was accused of accumulating more than $49 million in assets.

Meanwhile, China's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the watchdog against corruption, recently announced corruption charges against Yan Dongliang, the former head of the State Administration of Work Safety. He was fired from his post as the agency's director after an explosion in a warehouse killed more than 170 people. Zhou Benshun, the former Communist Party boss in Hebei, has also been slapped with corruption charges.
