Toyota announced on Wednesday it will call back about 5.8 million cars in Japan, Europe, China, and other countries over Takata's defective air bag inflators, bringing the total number of recalled Toyota vehicles to 23.1 million since the start of Takata scandal.

The faulty air bag inflators reportedly lack a drying agent that prevents the buildup of moisture. Without such chemical, too much exposure on moisture could trigger the airbag to rupture and spew shrapnel without warning, the CNBC News reported.

Takata uses ammonium nitrate in its airbag inflators, which could become unstable when exposed for a long time under hot and moist conditions, the UPI noted.

The recall will affect Toyota's Corolla and the Vitz or Yaris subcompact hatchback model. It covers both the driver-side and passenger-side airbags that were installed in cars manufactured between May 2000 and November 2001 as well as April 2006 and December 2014, according to Reuters.

An estimated 1.16 million units in Japan, 820,000 in China, and 1.47 million in the European market will be called back.

The recall extends to Central and South America, Africa, the Near and Middle East, and Singapore as well. It also affects Hilux pick-up truck and the Etios line of sedans and hatchbacks, Reuters noted.

Wednesday's announcement does not include any vehicles from the United States as Toyota has already recalled the U.S. units with defective airbags.

The latest recall also involved nearly 20,000 cars that may now have problems with airbag replacements following an initial 2010 recall. The replacement parts also lack the drying agent, according to Fortune.

So far, authorities have recorded at least 16 deaths linked with Takata's faulty airbags, CNN money reported.
