The race to qualify in the upcoming Dubai World Superseries Finals is becoming more intense as the tournament nears its opening with only two events remaining to be staged before the final list of the players is officially known.

The prestigious season-ending Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Superseries event will take place at the Hamdan Sports Complex in the modern city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It offers a massive $1 million total prize pot, and it will commence on Dec. 14 and will conclude on Dec. 18.

China Open will be played on Nov. 15 to 20, and it will be followed by the Hong Kong Open, which will run between Nov. 22 and 27. These two international badminton events are the only remaining World Superseries tournaments this season.

According to The National, in order to qualify for the said competition, players must make it to the top eight of the Destination Dubai rankings following the completion of the 12-event Superseries. This year, the reigning Olympic gold medalist will be awarded a wildcard slot to enter the renowned badminton tourney, provided that they belong to the top 20 players in the world.

With Chen Long of China and Spain's Carolina Marin being the men's singles and women's singles events champions, respectively, in the recently concluded 2016 Rio Olympic Games last August, only seven qualifying spots could be left open for the above mentioned event.

Basing from the latest world rankings in the official website of the BWF, the men's singles world No. 2 Chen Long currently ranks No. 20 in the Destination Dubai rankings while the women's singles top-ranked Marin only sits on the 10th spot.

Son Wan Ho (South Korea), Tian Houwei (China), Jan O Jorgensen (Denmark), Hans-Kristian Vittinghus (Denmark), and Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia) are projected to surely make the final cut for the men's singles event, while Tai Tzu Ying (Chinese Taipei), Akane Yamaguchi (Japan), Ratchanok Intanon (Thailand), Sun Yu (China), and He Bingjiao (China) are expected to be competing in the Dubai World Superseries Finals next month.
