ProtonMail said in a statement, "We do not have any position for or against Trump, or any position for or against any particular country or government. Privacy is a universal value, so therefore, there are no sides to take."

ProtonMail was founded out of the CERN research lab, which is the  European Organization for Nuclear Research, outside of Geneva, Switzerland, in 2013. The secure email provider launched its service in beta in 2014, and from then on, it went to accumulate $2.5 million in funding ahead of its global launch earlier this year.

Republican Party's Donald Trump won the presidency in a tightly contested battle against Democrat's Hillary Clinton. Following Trump's election, there have been growing concerns in the U.S. regarding mass surveillance program and encryption policies.

During the campaign period, Trump has repeatedly attacked tech companies for their refusal to help government agencies with regard to battling crime. According to Venture Beat, Trump even called the public to boycott Apple products when the tech company refused to help the Federal Bureau of Investigations in unlocking the iPhone unit used by one of the San Bernardino killers.

Aside from Trump's successful bid to the White House, some security and privacy advocates also pointed out the re-election of Republican Senator Richard Burr who is a staunch supporter of the attempt to create a back-door access to some tech products.
