Peterson to Rice to RG3: Wild Week and Weekend in the NFL

It's only Week 2 in the NFL, but the league has had a wild season so far both on and off the field.

Just breaking, the Minnesota Vikings announced embattled star running back Adrian Peterson would be back on the field against the New Orleans Saints next weekend. Peterson missed Sunday's game when he was held out by the team following indictment in Texas for allegedly injuring his 4-year-old-child when he beat/disciplined him with a wood switch.

Peterson may be in next Sunday, but Ray Rice definitely is not. His indefinite suspension remains in place following the fall-out from videos and charges related to his alleged knock-out, drag-out Atlantic City, N.J., incident with his then-fiancee and now wife.

Plenty, however, happened on the field Sunday and a lot of it wasn't so nice either. An unusual number of high profile injuries occurred.

Chicago Bear star cornerback Charles Tillman re-injured his triceps and appeared to be out for the season and probably forever. The 12-year NFL star already said he probably would retire, but this injury seems to have sealed the deal.

Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III also sustained a potentially serious injury. He dislocated his left ankle in a freak play and had an MRI Monday. While the ankle wasn't fractured, it's in a cast. This was the fourth time during his three-year career he has left games with an injury. No timetable for his return was announced, but it would be much later in the season if at all, according to sources.

Defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and perennial playoff contender New Orleans Saints got off to rough starts with each losing on the road Sunday. The Browns beat the Saints on a last-second field goal and the Seahawks succumbed to the San Diego Chargers in the Fourth Quarter.

Sunday was bitter, not sweet, for the New York Jets, too. A phantom timeout called by the referees wiped out a touchdown at the end of the game that would have tied the Green Bay packers. However, the coach is the only person on the sideline authorized to call a timeout and coach Rex Ryan didn't call one. The odd occurrence is sure to be reviewed this week by NFL leaders.

It wasn't all doom and gloom though. One of the bright stars, was Chicago Bears superstar Brandon Marshall, who became a human highlight reel Sunday as he made one of the most spectacular one-handed catches in NFL memory. Marshall caught three touchdowns on Sunday as the Bears wiped out the San Francisco 49ers during the first game at the 49ers new Santa Clara stadium.
