Entertainment District in China Creates ‘No Cell Phone’ Pedestrian Lanes

The southwest city of Chongqing in China has designated special lanes for people that walk while constantly looking down on their mobile phones so they can avoid other pedestrians.

The other half of these special streets in the city's entertainment district have signs and markings that reserve it as a "No Cell Phone" lane, as well.

Nong Cheng, a spokeswoman for the district's property management company, said there are lots of elderly people and children on the street and people that keep on looking at their phones while walking cause unnecessary collisions.

Nevertheless, she made it clear the initiative was meant to satirize the dangers of texting while walking. Nong, however, noted that most people don't follow the guidelines.

Chinese pedestrians commented on the new sidewalk in Weibo, China's version of Twitter.

"Am I supposed to jump to the other side of the path when I get an incoming phone call?" questions one user.

"Maybe they can even build one traffic lane especially for drunk drivers in the future," said another.

Chongqing got the inspiration from National Geographic in United States.  A similar street with a section set aside for mobile phone users exists in Washington, D.C.

This street, however, was part of a televised behavioral experiment.

The new Chongqing sidewalk created a new problem: street congestion because people stop just to take photos of it.
