Electric car manufacturer Tesla recently announced that it is voluntarily recalling about 7,000 adapters used for charging the company's electric cars after it received two reports of overheating that caused some plastic components to melt.

In an email sent to affected customers, Tesla said that it received the overheating report in November. The company added that it only caused some plastic components to melt and that no major damage was incurred.

According to Tesla, it has already informed federal regulators about the problem as well as the recall. The company said that the faulty accessories were manufactured by a third-party supplier, and not a single unit have been sold in the last six months.

The two reported overheating issues involved the NEMA 14-30 adapters. According to CNet, these adapters are sometimes used to charge Tesla cars through a clothes-dryer appliance outlet in the United States. Tesla said that the problem is isolated within the U.S. and that international customers are not affected.

Tesla will start shipping replacement adapters in the next few weeks. It advised its customers to stop using the affected adapters for the meantime.

Aside from the NEMA 14-30 adapters, Tesla said that it will also replace its NEMA 10-30 and NEMA 6-50 adapters since these two share a similar design with the overheating one, according to Bloomberg. Replacement for the last two adapters will take about three months to be shipped since there were no reported incidents involving them. Tesla said that owners can continue using them until further notice.
