China has built more military facilities on Yongshu Reef (called Kagitingan Reef by the Philippines and Fiery Cross Reef by others), including a mdeical clinic to take care of its garrison that might now number up to 500 soldiers, airmen and sailors of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

China seized the reef from the Philippines in 1988 and began militarizing the reef in 2014. Reclamation increased the reef's size to 2.74 square kilometers, large enough to house hundreds of troops, their weapons and equipment.

More important, the reef now supports a 3,125 meter-long runway suitable for fighter jets and large aircraft of the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). There is also an operational early warning radar system on the expanded reef.

The garrison, originally estimated at 200 men in 2014, might now have more than doubled because of the larger number of military facilities and quarters.

The PLA reported the Nansha islands and reefs have witnessed the construction of more infrastructure and facilities, including medical services, airports, accommodation, entertainment and communications. It said these changes have all improved the quality of life of the soldiers that guard these islands.

A medical clinic opened in July on Fiery Cross Reef is equipped with emergency wards, a pharmacy and other medical facilities. The hospital expands the soldiers' access to quality medical services.

Also built were the latest generation of stilt houses constructed from steel and iron that offers soldiers a stable living space. Unlike the first and second generations, the current construction features satellite communication, digital TV and air conditioning,

These features serve as a perfect shelter against high salinity, temperatures and humidity.

In addition, modern barracks with air conditioning, TV and washing machines have also been constructed, with communication carriers launching 4G services. Soldiers now have their own training ground, as well as soccer and basketball courts.

Since 1988 China has seized these reefs from the militarily insignificant Philippines and has militarized them: Panganiban (Mischief), Zamora (Subi), Kennan (Chigua), Mabini (Johnson South), Burgos (Gaven) and Calderon (Cuarteron).
