Matt Damon's The Great Wall raked in a whopping $67.4 million on its opening weekend, snatching the fourth-biggest debut of the year China, according to early estimates from the Ent Group.

The $150 million-budgeted movie is the biggest China-Hollywood co-production, thanks to the massive financing from Legendary, Universal, China Film Group, and Le Vision Pictures.

Directed by Oscar nominee Zhang Yimou, The Great Wall is the fourth biggest opening weekend in the mainland, trailing behind The Mermaid, Captain America" Civil War, and Warcraft, the Hollywood Reporter noted. Furthermore, it is also named the second highest December Imax opening ever, bagging in $7 million from 364 screens.

While Bloomberg noted that if a film that touches at least 100 million yuan ($14.4 million) is already considered a hit in China, Richard Huang, an analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc., said that "They key to watch for the next few weeks is whether the film could receive good reviews to keep the momentum."

So far, the English-language monster-action epic film received mix reactions from both moviegoers and critics. It gained a score of 5.7 out of 10 from movie database IMDB, while it got 8.4 from China's Maoyan.

Other market data also revealed that The Great Wall is giving China's overall cinema market a boost, nationwide cumulative takings on each of the three days surpassed 26 percent, up from the corresponding days last week, according to the Variety.

The Great Wall is scheduled to open in 30 other countries between late December and April, the IMDB noted. North American release will be on Feb. 17.
