Microsoft confirmed that the company will extend technical support for the Windows 7 operating system until Jan. 14, 2020, although it highly encouraged corporate users to migrate into the new Windows 10 platform.

Microsoft said that despite the security updates provided for Windows 7, the system is not really cut in terms of current security trends. In a statement acquired by ZDNet, Microsoft Germany head of Windows Markus Nitschke said that Windows 7 "does not meet the requirements of modern systems, nor the security requirements of IT departments."

Another important factor that might affect this migration is the fact that Intel's Skylake and Kaby Lake processors have little or no driver support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. According to Ars Technica, among the support not included are integrated USB 3 controllers and processor controlled power management.

AMD's new Ryzen processors and Windows computers built with a Qualcomm 835 processor also require Windows 10. While these systems do support Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, they do not have full system support just like Intel's Kaby Lake and Skylake processors.

The perceived vulnerabilities on the Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 platforms were pointed out by Microsoft in a recent write-up regarding two zero-day exploits that were used to hack the Democratic National Committee and the one used by alleged Russian hackers.

With the threat of hackers and malware attacks increasing by the day, Microsoft is urging corporate users to switch to newer and more secure computer system platforms as soon as possible to prevent larger issues from surfacing.
