Huang Xinggu, the former mayor of northern city of Tianjin, is the latest high-profile government official in China to face graft charges. President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption drive has led to conviction as well as suspension of several high-ranking officials.

Huang was appointed as the mayor of Tianjin in 2008 and also served as the acting Communist Party chief in Tianjin. He was formally put under investigation for bribery charges in September last year.

The state prosecutor said that Huang would face prosecution for taking bribe adding that the legal procedure against him has already been started.

The prosecutor did not elaborate further, but mentioned that "coercive measures" have been approved against the accused. "Coercive measures" in China usually includes "detention."

It was not possible to reach Huang for comment and is not clear if he will be allowed to hire a lawyer or legal consultant.

Huang's prosecution comes barely a month after China's former deputy sports minister Xiao Tian was sent behind bars for bribery. A local court found Xiao guilty of taking 7.96 million Yuan ($1.15 million) in bribes.

Xi initiated the nationwide anti-corruption drive immediately after assuming presidency to drive out graft and mismanagement from the government.
