HTC has announced it is open for applications from developers, offering 1000 of Vive Trackers to them and other creative communities to test the device.

Developers can now apply to have a chance to test the virtual reality (VR) peripheral without shelling out money. Interested applicants are required to fill in several questions such as their company's name, experience, location, and contact information. In addition, developers need to elaborate how they plan to use the Tracker in their projects and how many Trackers they might want. If the developers have a partially developed idea, they can also attach a link to the product or prototype's web page as well as the launch date.

“Ready to debut a new product in VR? Want to create an API to track a pet (or your coffee table) within the VR world? Want to track a keyboard in VR? Tell us how and why,” HTC said in a blog post.

HTC’s Vive Tracker is an accessory designed for virtual reality content creation. It can connect wirelessly to the Vive headset and can be easily attached to existing physical objects or interesting new form factors. It eliminates the need to spend a lot of time and money to incorporate tracking sensors into VR-focused peripherals.

The tracking device has a USB interface, which is helpful when adding hardware such as Raspberry Pi board or a DSLR camera, and it measures 3.92-inch x 1.66-inch.

Currently, there are several applications for the Vive Tracker including haptic gloves for VR and the first VR-dedicated camera.
