Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG FC routed Thai Premier League squad Sukhothai FC, 3-0, in a 2017 AFC Champions League play-off round match held at the Shanghai Stadium on Tuesday.

Newly-acquired Brazilian midfielder Oscar scored the opening goal for head coach André Villas-Boas' side in the 34th minute to score in his competitive debut for the Red Eagles.

The 25-year-old former Chelsea standout received a pass from Odil Ahmedov following an aggressive counter-attack by SIPG. The ball slipped through three defenders before Oscar controlled it on the right side of the backline and calmly shot it past Sukhothai goalkeeper Pairote Eiam-mak.

Compatriot striker Elkeson then doubled the lead five minutes later with an instinctive backheel shot following a botched shot by winger Wu Lei, giving the hosts a 2-0 advantage at the half.

An own goal by Sukhothai defender Kiattisak Toopkhuntod in the 58th minute, as he tried to block a stunner by Elkeson, sealed the lopsided victory for Shanghai, Daily Mail Online reported.

Oscar was subbed by Yu Hai with 10 minutes left on the clock to cap an impressive first game for the Red Eagles. Shanghai was the overwhelming favorite in the match after placing third in the China top-flight last season behind six-straight CSL champions Guangzhou Evergrande and Jiangsu Suning while Sukhothai finished seventh in Thailand's first-tier competitions, via ESPN.

Villas-Boas' boys did not disappoint as they completely overpowered the Fire Bat right after Oscar's goal. Sukhothai was able to hold their own against Shanghai for the first half-hour of the contest, being aggressive in their attacks and preventing the hosts' trio of Brazilians to penetrate their defense.

However, it was only a matter of time before the Red Eagles' star power took over to hand their side an easy win. SIPG now joins South Korea's FC Seoul, Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds, and Australia's Western Sydney Wanderers in the Group F competitions for the group stage of the tournament.
