A man who was reprimanded for smoking inside the bus stabbed the bus driver on Saturday in Hubei province. In China, smoking inside vehicles are prohibited, and violators will be fined 20 yuan to 50 yuan.

As the bus was approaching a bus stop in Wuhan, Hubei, the unidentified suspect lit up a cigarette, which prompted the bus driver to give him a verbal warning to stop smoking inside the vehicle. The man then went to the front of the bus and assaulted the driver with a knife, Chinese media reported.

The assailant fled and disappeared to a crowded street. Police held an overnight manhunt for the suspect who was caught the next morning, having breakfeast at a food stall.

The bus driver was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. He did not sustain critical injuries.

Police said that the suspect has had a criminal record and has been jailed many times for assault.
