A huge fire erupted at Shanghai Shenhua's home ground of Hongkou Stadium on Tuesday morning with no casualties or injuries reported.

According to the South China Morning Post, the inferno which started in one corner of the 33,060-seater stadium at around 8:30 in the morning, affecting morning traffic close to the arena. The fire was contained immediately as soon as local firefighters had arrived.

Local officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze and are yet to release their findings to the media. The Sun indicated that the police believe it may have begun in the arena's indoor rock climbing section, although it is not yet known whether it was intentionally done or not.

There are also no official releases regarding the size and cost of the damage. Chinese football broadcaster Cameron Wilson said that it seemed to have been limited to only one part of the stadium with the stands and the pitch itself remaining intact. However, an area of Shanghai's underground system had to be shut down to contain the fire.

"There's a part of the roof been burned but from what I know of the stadium having been going for years it doesn't look like anything irreparable," said Wilson.

Shenhua is set to host Changchun Yatai in a China top-flight match at the Hongkou Stadium on April 16. Some reports said that the team might be forced to play the said game somewhere else while others state that repairs will be finished by that time.

Hongkou Stadium was opened in 1999. Several big events have taken place in the said arena, such as the 2007 Women's World Cup and musical concerts hosting big stars like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Kylie Minogue.

English Premier League club Arsenal and German Bundesliga side Bayern Munich are also scheduled to play a friendly game at the stadium in July.
