Love - and marriages, for that matter - really do not last forever. The Supreme People's Court (SPC) said that Chinese courts heard almost 1.4 million divorce cases in 2016.

"Additionally, 3.46 million Chinese couples divorced in civil affairs offices in 2016," said Du Wanhua, a senior official at the SPC. He added that court officials should learn sociology and psychology to better mediate family disputes, which is one of the leading causes of divorce.

Almost 10 million people were directly involved, and more than 50 million people, including children and close relatives, were affected.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs has seen a growing trend in divorces. In 2014, 2.96 million couples divorced, while 3.15 million couples ended their marriages in 2015,

In the beginning of March, more than 160 couples in Jiangbei, Jiangsu province, filed for divorce to claim compensation. The village will be demolished to make way for technologically advanced development zone. The people affected learned that they can receive two new houses and at lest US$19,000 if they divorced and claimed the compensation as singles.

However, most of them still plan to live together as a couple, albeit without the official title of "married."
