Taiwan Approves Ban of Killing Cats and Dogs for Human Consumption

Taiwan's amendments to the Animal Protection Act that includes stringent laws against eating cat and dog meats were finally passed into the law on Tuesday. 

According to the Legislative Yuan, Taiwan's law-creating body, those who deliberately harm animals that result in mangled limbs, organ failure, or death will face up to two years in jail and a fine of NT$200,000 (45,000 yuan). Those who will kill not only cats and dogs, but other protected animals, will receive the same punishment.

Before the recent celebrated amendment, the penalty was only one year in prison maximum and NT$1 million (225,500 yuan). 

A provision that bans the sale and consumption of dog and cat meat and food products that have the meat or parts of cats and dogs states that the violators' names and photos will be publicized and will face a fine of NT$50,000 to NT$250,000 (11,200 yuan to 56,377 yuan). 

Drivers and motorcycles are now prohibited from pulling animals on a long leash, otherwise, they will be fined NT$3,000 to NT$15,000 (680 yuan to 3,400 yuan).
