The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly looking to get rid of running back Adrian Peterson after he was charged with child abuse against his own son. According to some NFL insiders, Peterson's situation could present the right time for the Dallas Cowboys to snag the former NFL MVP.

The Vikings might have had enough of Peterson, and are apparently on their way to parting ways with their franchise player, according to NFL insider Chris Mortesen of ESPN on Sunday.

"The Vikings do not foresee Peterson in their future, according to team sources, following a botched attempt to activate the running back this past Monday only to reverse course Wednesday by placing him on the commissioner's exempt list," ESPN reported.

The 29-year old Peterson insisted that he did not intend to hurt his son, adding it's just his way of corporal punishment. However, the NFL is expected to drop a heavy punishment on the running back - including multiple-game suspensions and heavy fines.

Peterson faces a child abuse charge in Texas for using a wooden switch to spank his 4-year-old son in May. He has said he meant only to discipline the boy and not hurt him.

Thanks to the Viking's move to put him on the commissioner's exempt list, Peterson can still pocket the remainder of his $11.75 million paycheck for the 2014-15 NFL season.

The Vikings have not disclosed whether they plan to activate Peterson at any point this season.

With his situation in Minnesota spiraling out of control, there are speculations that the Cowboys could pull off a trade for Peterson. One of the strong proponents of this idea is Shan Shariff, sports show host of Dallas 105.3 Fan.

"Christmas may have just come early for the Dallas Cowboys," Shariff stated on his show. "An unbelievable opportunity may be on the horizon where the best running back in football could be available. Jerry Jones can once again swing for the green he missed in Johnny Manziel. Adrian Peterson could be coming home."

The Cowboys are doing well so far this season, winning against the Tennessee Titans and St. Louis Rams to take a 2-1 slate. Meanwhile, Peterson covered 75 yards on 21 carries so far without a TD.

Will this trade happen? Only time will tell.
