Former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas, 36, reportedly was dealing out road rage just prior to his fatal SUV crash a mile from his home, according to numerous reports Tuesday.

Witness statements and real-time 911 calls beginning shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday painted a picture of Bironas driving erratically, speeding and threatening people in at least two vehicles before his SUV swerved off the road near his home, hitting a clump of trees and killing him instantly.

The Nashville Tennessean reported Bironas leaving his home around 10:30 in an unusual fashion with his wife reporting him missing an hour later. Four Belmont University students said they saw Bironas driving with his vehicle window down and some sort of strange exhaust smell emanating from his vehicle.

Students said they told Bironas about the strange odor at which time he became enraged, saying he was going to kill everybody in the car. Connor Fraley, 20, said he called 911 when Bironas' white SUV followed their vehicle at a high rate of speed.

Tapes of the call confirmed the account although Fraley didn't give his name to 911 dispatchers. Fraley said he didn't know who the SUV driver was until he saw news reports the next day and recognized Bironas from photos.

A second woman also reported Bironas engaging in road rage behavior. She called 911 at 11:03 p.m. saying a white SUV tried to run her vehicle off the road. She told dispatchers the man, later identified as Bironas, tried to start a fight with her and her husband and was dangerously drunk or on drugs while trying to run them off the road.

Police said the scene revealed no evidence of alcohol or drugs. An autopsy has yet to have been completed and no charges were filed.

Bironas was married in June to Rachel Bradshaw, an up-and-coming Nashville singer and daughter of Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw. He scored more than 1,000 points during a nine-year stint with the Titans and ranked fourth in field goal percentage in NFL history with a success rate of more than 85 percent.

He had been cut by the Titans due to salary constraints and recently had worked out for the Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers seeking a new job.
