At least two civilians died after airstrikes mounted by the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State in Syria hit grain silos, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Monday

The Observatory also said coalition pilots may have mistaken the facility as an Islamic State command post.

Rami Abdulrahman, who directs the Britain-based human rights group that tracks the developments of the war in Syria, said the strikes only killed workers and civilians at the cite. He added that the strikes destroyed the food stored in the facility in Manbij, Aleppo.

The U.S. military said that the overnight airstrikes in Manbij targeted Islamic State vehicles near the grain silos and added that they have yet to confirm claims of civilian casualties, the Daily Mail reported.

The military also claimed the terror group previously used the facility as a vehicle staging area and logistics hub.

US military's Central Command spokesman Colonel Patrick Ryder promised to investigate the deaths, saying such matters are taken seriously.

The coalition has also conducted overnight air raids against Islamic State-controlled facilities in Raqqa, Hassakeh and Deir el-Zour, the Observatory reported.

Several Islamic State militants were wounded in Deir el-Zour province where Syria's largest gas plant was hit. The plant itself sustained no damage, according to the Observatory.

The Monday morning mission raided an empty military base and a school in Tel Abyad near the Syria-Turkey border, which according to an Associate Press source, were abandoned by Islamic State fighters four months ago.

The coalition "must not have fresh intelligence," AP quoted a resident on the Turkish side of the border as saying.

The United States with five Arab allies have been launching waves of airstrikes targeting Islamic State militants and facilities in Syria.

International allies, including some European countries, have joined the aerial bombardments in Iraq in the recent weeks, but refused to attack Syrian targets.
