Michael Phelps' road to another Olympics took a detour early Tuesday when he was arrested in Maryland on suspicion of driving under the influence, speeding and crossing double lane lines at Baltimore's Interstate 95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

The most decorated Olympian ever with 18 gold medals, 22 medals in all, allegedly sped by Maryland Transportation Authority officers in a white 2014 Land Rover going almost 85 miles per hour in a 45-mph zone. Police stopped him by the tunnel toll plaza where he was unable to perform field sobriety tests.

Phelps was processed at the scene, then released in the custody of a person referred to as a "responsible adult." Drew Johnson, his agent, and Bob Bowman, Team USA swimming coach, didn't respond to requests for comment from local news sources. Phelps sent out tweets later Tuesday saying he was deeply sorry for letting everyone down.

It's not Phelps' first run-in with trouble, not even his first DUI charge. He was sentenced to 18 months probation after pleading guilty to a 2004 DUI charge. He apologized after that incident.

Phelps was photographed at a 2009 party smoking pot from a bong at an University of South Carolina frat party. He apologized then, too, saying the mistake had allowed him to grow and learn. He also was suspended from swimming events for three months and lost his Nestle sponsorship.

Phelps retired in 2012 after participating in the last of his four Olympics at the London games. He was rumored to be making a comeback for the 2016 Brazil games after he entered the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency drug testing program last year. The anti-doping protocol program required nine months of testing before allowing swimmers to re-enter competition.

Phelps said he was taking one step at a time when it came to competing at Rio de Janeiro. He was practicing rigorously, though, saying he needed the workouts so he could participate in elite competition again. He was said to be getting ready for next summer's world championships in Russia.
