The center said the earthquake's epicenter was registered at 28.4 degrees north and 102.8 degree east of Yuexi County. The earthquake's origin has not been known as of this posting.

Last August, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit the border area between Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces, but no casualties were reported. Landslides and transport disruptions were also reported.

Another earthquake in Yunnan resulted to the death of four people and the injuries of 13 others. Vehicles were also damaged when a landslide occurred on a road from Shangri-La County to Deqin County following the quake

The Provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan in China are no strangers to earthquakes, as earth moving are reported almost everyday.

On August 3, at least 600 people were believed to have died in the earthquake that struck Yunan province.

The quake, which registered 6.1 on the Richter Scale, hit a mountainous area, triggering landslides that covered houses that were already damaged by the ground moving.

China's Ministry of Civil Affairs said more than 2,400 people were hurt during the said earthquake.
