More Americans are Suffering from Depression, New Study Shows

Depression

There are more depressed Americans now than ever before, says a new study published in the journal, Social Indicator Research

Researchers from San Diego State University analyzed the data from 6.9 million teenagers and adults from all over the United States.

They found out that more Americans are now reporting more psychosomatic symptoms of depression like trouble sleeping and concentrating compared to the 1980s.

Jean Twenge, one of the researchers, said previous studies showed more people are treated nowadays for depression. She also said their findings show an increase in symptoms that most people don't even know are connected with depression.

Twenge believes this could be a sign that more teenagers and adults are suffering from depression, but just aren't aware of it.

Researchers said previous data showed 38 percent of teenagers are having problems like remembering things.

They also explained that 74 percent of teenagers have problems with sleeping and are twice likely to have sought professional help for mental health issues.

Researchers also found out 50 percent of college students feel a sense of being overwhelmed.

Meanwhile, most adults involved in the study said they experience restless nights, have poor diet and put a lot of effort in a lot of things, which could be symptoms of depression.

Researchers however, found there was a decline in the suicide rates of teenagers but this still doesn't outweigh the increase of depression symptoms on teenagers.

Twenge also added that even though anti-depressant medications may have helped people who experience severe depression, this still don't decrease other symptoms which have significant effects.
