Breast Implants can Cause ALCL, Study Claims

Breast implants

A new study published in the journal Mutation Research features reviewed cases of association of breast implants with rare form of malignant lymphoma called ALCL.

Lukas Kenner, one of the researchers, said that he and his colleagues said that there have been 71 documented cases of Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) worldwide.

Researchers suspect that this is caused by breast surgery because these reported cases involved patients who developed ACLC after ten years of having breasts implants.

They explained that ACLC can normally be found on lymph nodes, skin, lung and soft tissue but rarely on breasts.

Despite this, researchers informed the public that among the three million people who have breast implants, there have been only six reported cases of ALCL.

They added that breast implants are generally safe and having a breast surgery will not for any form of cancer.

However, researchers would still be looking into this because they might be looking to a new subtype of ALCL that do not have ALK which increases their chances of survival.

Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) is an abnormal form of protein that is developed in one of the subtypes of ALCL.

Researchers explained that there are ACLC patients who had successful chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatments.

However, there are many cases where the lymphoma subsided on its own upon removal of the implant and its surrounding tissue, they added.

The abnormal immune response from the body could be the reason for the cancer, they theorized.

To date, researchers are eager to clear the reason why implants can cause lymphoma to help these patients.

They are now figuring out which implants and dentures from other parts of the body can cause ACLC.
