Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos Plans to Pre-load Washington Post on Kindles

Amazon The Washington Post

It was only a matter of time before Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos used his primary company to help The Washington Post, the news organisation he bought for $250 million last year. All new Kindle Fire HDX owners will get The Washington Post app pre-loaded on their Kindle with a free month of subscription.

Amazon did not specify exactly how long the free membership lasts, but users expect one month free trial would be enough. Amazon does one month free trials on most of their subscription services, including Amazon Instant Video, Prime and Prime Music.

The Washington Post is still disguised as one of the best news organisations in the United States, it just needs to be available to more readers. Bezos believes by porting it onto the Kindle Fire HDX, some of the users will stick around longer than the first month and continue subscribing.

Amazon has placed big bets on original content, similar to rival Netflix. Having The Washington Post could be another freebie to get users interested. Surprisingly, no mention of The Washington Post coming to the Prime package, but users believe this will be the next step, if subscription rates don't rise in the next few months.

The Washington Post deal was murked with questions, especially since businessmen owning the media is not seen as a good thing, normally. Bezos has said he will not push certain stories or make sure others stay away from the newspaper, but Amazon's influence is growing.

Currently, the rate to subscribe is $99 for the first four weeks, followed by $3.75 every week after. This is expected to stay the same when the Amazon app launches on the Kindle Fire HDX.
