Americans apparently dislike Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), based on a recent Gallup phone survey.

In the last few months, Reid's popularity has gone down by six points, and only 21 percent of Americans said they favored him. Moreover, the Nevada Democrat's unpopularity rating now hovers at 45 percent, USA Today detailed.

Boehner's rating, on the other hand, slid down three points since April, but this number looks better than Reid's. However, 50 percent of U.S. citizens expressed their dislike for the House speaker, the report added.

Trouble is brewing for Boehner in his GOP base, with 46 percent of Republicans in favor of him and 40 percent view him unfavorably. Sen. Reid has a 46 percent favorable rating and 16 percent unfavorable rating from the Democrats, the report said.

The troubling results from the new poll spell an impending disaster for Reid, whose favorable rating among independents has gone through a nine-point decline from 2013 to 13 percent. The Senate Democratic leader is about to engage in a pivotal role in major Senate elections in states such as Alaska and New Hampshire.

Boehner is confident he will be able to gain enough support to give him the House speaker's seat once again, the report stated.

Gallup said Reid is leading in the unpopularity race, but his scores were already very low that there was not much room for further decline.

In Boehner' case, his unpopular image within his own party may have been caused by the Congress' spending stalemate last year, which shut down the U.S. government for 16 days, Gallup officials explained.

This year, Boehner began pushing for immigration reform and this might have also contributed to his low rating, the Washington Examiner reported.

The midterm election is just less than a month away and Reid is becoming the target in some Senate campaigns.

The said poll was conducted over the phone among 1,252 adult respondents from September 25 to 30, according to the report.
