The mystery-thriller was the film adaptation of Gillian Flynn's 2012 best-selling novel. The film featured a stellar cast, which tells the story of Nick Dunne and Amy Dunne.

Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike played the role of the husband and wife, respectively.

The plot centers on Amy's disappearance, which gathered intense media coverage that implicated Nick into her murder. The film highlights both character's story and how each committed a crime of deceit.

Together with Affleck and Pike are Neil Patrick Harris, who played the role of Amy's ex, together with Carrie Coon and Tyler Perry.

Gone Girl's box-office success was a refreshing take from summer's superhero movies.

Gone Girl has received positive reviews for "delivering a dark, tense plot, bolstered by strong performances from Pike and Affleck," writes Viral News Global.

Online review aggregator Metacritic gave the movie a rating of 79 percent, while Rotten Tomatoes gave the film 87 percent.

Gone Girl was also hailed as another novel-inspired movie that did not only earn the raves of critics but also went on to become a financial success, just like Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars who did strongly in the box-office.

The film managed to out-earn the horror movie, Annabelle, which grossed US$37.2 million.

Following Gone Girl and Annabelle is the Denzel Washington starrer, The Equalizer, who dropped to number three after earning US$19 million over the weekend; the film's total gross was over US$64 million. Meanwhile, rounding up the top give are The Boxtrolls and The Maze Runner at fourth and fifth place, respectively.
