Tidal flooding on the eastern U.S. coast will become more rampant as sea levels rise due to the unprecedented effects of climate change.

Washington DC will be the hardest hit by these floods. This phenomenon is anticipated in the next three decades, according to a report from the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Although many coastal communities are already facing problems with yearly floods that make street and road systems impassable, the report projected a significant increase in tidal floods that could be disastrous in urban cities.

Around 15 to 30 years from now, scientists project probable extreme flooding events in 52 areas. Data from sea level rise considered moderate are consolidated from the National Climate Assessment to predict areas that will be affected by extreme flooding.

In the next 15 years, sea levels will exceed over five inches and about 11 inches in the next 30 years, according to the study. Some 52 areas in the eastern U.S. coast are anticipated to experience floods as often as twice a month caused by coastal storm surges and tidal sea levels rising in the next 15 years.

On a more dismal note, one in every three areas will experience flooding at a rate of 180 or more in a year in the next 30 years. The U.S. capital, Washington D.C., is seen as the most vulnerable by tidal flooding. By 2045, the capital is set to experience a whopping 388 tidal floodings a year, according to the study.

Tides that cause nuisance floods will escalate and become extensive flooding that can lead to destruction of property and evacuation. Areas most vulnerable should already begin flood-proofing homes and buildings in their communities. Scientists suggest these precautions along with the construction of sturdy sea walls.
