Suffering far more serious health issues than previously disclosed, NFL legend Bart Starr, 80 was recovering comfortably this week from a series of serious health events. His family said they were optimistic he would recover from various ailments suffered since early last month.

Last month, family announced the former Green Bay Packers star quarterback has suffered a minor stroke. Apparently it was more serious than that. His wife, Cherry Starr, issued a statement detailing the various health challenges that started with Sept. 2 stroke and Sept. 7 heart attack.

Not only did Starr suffer an ischemic stroke on Sept. 2, he also suffered a hemorrhagic stroke five days later along with the heart attack that was said to be mild.

Cherry Starr said seizures accompanied the stroke and heart attack further compounding Starr's serious condition. Medication has helped control the seizures and the family remained optimistic about Starr's recovery despite the various bumps in his road to recovery, she said.

Starr was now medically stable and starting to show progress in his recovery, Cherry Starr said. The family appreciated thoughts and prayers from his many fans, she added.

Starr was an NFL all-pro player during a prominent NFL career, most of which was played under the tutelage of coaching legend Vince Lombardi . He took the Packers to NFL championships including victories in the first two Super Bowls.

Starr also coached the Packers from 1975-1983. He was inducted into Canton, Ohio's Pro Football Hall of Fame as soon as he became eligible in 1977.

A former University of Alabama star, Starr now lives at Birmingham, Ala. He had been active in participating in Green Bay Packers events and frequently spent time in Green Bay

Starr's health issues interfered with his attendance at the annual Packers alumni weekend that was scheduled to coincide with the team's game against the New York Jets on Sept. 14 won by the Packers 31-24.
