Amazon (AMZN) will open its first retail store in New York City, according to The Wall Street Journal. The store will be located across from the Empire State Building, at 7 West 34th Street in, and a block away from the iconic Macy's department store.

It will be Amazon's first foray into so-called brick and mortar stores after 20 years of exclusively online sales. However, it won't be like a typical department store since Amazon has too many items to display. Instead, it will be a warehouse of Amazon items, allowing users to return, exchange and even order for same-day pick up.

The New York City location will be ideal for those who can't - or don't want to - wait days for their Amazon product to arrive in the mail. Customers will be able to order products online at Amazon.com, then pick it up a few hours later at the store.

This is not Amazon's first move into the real world as the company has its Amazon Lockers, a self-service parcel delivery service, based around the U.S. But this will be the first time Amazon opens up its warehouse to customers. If successful, Amazon will look into opening more stores around the U.S and potentially in Europe.

Amazon will not be the first tech company to sell products in-store, Apple Stores are incredibly popular and Microsoft (MSFT) has started their own stores to sell software and third party hardware. Google (GOOG) had been looking to open stores on barges, but the plan fell through.
