Chinese consumer electronics company Xiaomi, Inc. recently launched its first healthcare-related device dubbed the iHealth.

This device is a smart blood pressure monitoring dock, otherwise known as a sphygmomanometer, that lets users monitor blood pressure and heart rate via a smartphone app.

Xiaomi iHealth was launched in China exclusively on the company's official website and costs only US$32 (¥199).

Xiaomi developed the iHealth device in collaboration with Silicon Valley-based health device maker iHealth Labs Inc., which is a spin-off of China's medical equipment maker, Andon Health Co. Ltd.

The device comes with a downloadable app customized for Xiaomi's smartphones. It tracks blood pressure, pulse and heart rate on a live chart. It also lets users share the results.

The iHealth app works with a blood pressure cuff and a corded phone dock that enable users to measure systolic and diastolic pressures. The app turns on automatically after plugging a smartphone into the dock.

Xiaomi said the device can be used on Android devices but works best on Xiaomi's smartphones.

The move marks the Chinese company's first step into the world of technology-related healthcare devices. Last month, the company announced plans to further invest US$25 million into iHealth Labs.

"This investment and partnership should help to extend our global leadership in the mobile health category by providing new capabilities to accelerate growth and new user acquisition." said Yi Liu, chairman of Andon Health.

iHealth Labs, a company that designs and manufactures wireless scales and glucometers markets its products in Asia, Europe and North America.
