National Boss Day is today, Thursday, Oct. 16. Many people took the opportunity to thank their bosses, while others considered where their bosses came up short.

While many people like their bosses, more don't, according to a survey by Lynn Taylor Consulting that found 60 percent of employees didn't like their boss. The survey also found employees spent 13 work hours and more than six off-duty hours worrying about what their boss thought of their performance.

"A good manager will help you thrive and bring out the best in you," Taylor said, adding "a bad boss will likely jeopardize your career growth and impact your personal life."

Taylor's findings echoed those of Gallup Poll's 2013 State of the American Workplace survey. That study found 70 percent of Americans either were disengaged at work or hated their work. Adding incentives and bonuses didn't help bosses become more popular either, survey said.

The flip side was that nearly one-third of workers liked their bosses and jobs, according to the survey that considered opinions from 150,000 part-time and full-time workers.

Gallup found worker engagement actually dropped several percentage points over the last few years. This dovetailed with findings that between $450 billion to $550 billion were lost annually in worker production due to dissatisfaction with their work. That figure included lost production due to employee theft and missed work days.

The holiday was registered in 1958 by State Farm Insurance office secretary Patricia Bays Haroski with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. She chose Oct. 16 because it was her dad's birthday. Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner made it official in the Land of Lincoln in 1962 and the rest, as they say, is history.

In any event, employees who like their bossed uses the day as an occasion to celebrate that positive interaction. Some gave bosses flowers, cards or even gift certificates.
