Scientists from the University of Twente in The Netherlands are currently working on a project called SHERPA to develop robots capable of saving lives in the Alps in Italy.

They recently developed two types of robots: the Ground Rover and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle or UAV.

The Ground Rover carries a robotic arm capable of grasping the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, basically a flying robot.

The robots are being designed specifically to cooperate with rescue teams during calamities in the Alps.

Scientists say these robots can replace humans for risky tasks that involve locating victims after an avalanche.

They also emphasize the importance of cooperation and interaction between these robots and humans. The robots mainly support rescue teams.

Raffaella Carloni and other scientists from the Robotics and Mechatronics group (CTIT Institute) and the LEO Center for Service Robotics are working with the university to design the mechanical structure of the robotic arm.

The robotic arm will be attached to the Ground Rover and will be capable of holding onto the UAV while it's still in the air.

In addition to the robots, University of Twente scientists are also working on sensors that will be placed on rescue workers. Using these sensors, workers can track the robots' movements, its location and speed.
