Spanish nurse Teresa Romero, the first person diagnosed of Ebola outside the West African outbreak zones, appeared to have beaten the deadly hemorrhagic virus, Spanish authorities said Sunday.

Romero, an auxiliary nurse who was involved in the treatment of two priests repatriated from West Africa, tested negative on Ebola virus. A blood test revealed that her immune system cleared her body of traces of Ebola infection.

The communique released by the Spanish government, however, did not mention if she was Ebola-free.

Romero is still quarantined at Madrid's Carlos III Hospital where she awaits a second test to confirm if the elaborate treatments she had undergone have successfully freed her of the virus.

Her husband, Javier Limon, released a video after the announcement expressing his joy over his wife's recovery.

Limon, along with 14 others believed to have had contact with Romero before she was diagnosed, remain under observation in Carlos III Hospital as a precautionary measure to prevent the disease from spreading.

The communique released over the weekend indicated none of them have shown any symptom of Ebola over the last two weeks.

Romero's treatments included human serum drip from Ebola survivors' antibodies as well as other unnamed drugs. Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported that anti-viral medicine favipiravir, an experimental drug, was used to treat her.

Romero is believed to have contracted the disease while treating Miguel Pajaras, a missionary priest from Liberia who died on August 12, and Manuel Garcia Viejo who was flown home in late September and died a few days after treatment in Madrid.

Meanwhile, in the United States, 50 people who have come in contact with Liberian national Thomas Eric Duncan are expected to receive a clean bill of health on Sunday.

Duncan was the first case of Ebola diagnosis and death in the country. On Monday, his fiancée and her son are set to receive clearance as well after being monitored for Ebola symptoms over the last 21 days.
