World No. 3 Rafael Nadal won his opening match against Italian qualifier Simone Bolelli 6-2 6-2 at the Swiss Indoors in Basel on Monday.

After coming back from a wrist injury that sidelined the French Open champion all summer and being diagnosed with appendicitis at the recent Shanghai Open, Nadal pushed through to compete in Switzerland.

The second seeded Nadal had little challenge from the 29-year-old Italian as the Spaniard broke Bolelli twice in both sets to win his first match of the tournament after his last participation 10 years ago.

Roger Federer, who is top seed in the event, is gunning for his sixth title and with the absence of two-time champion Juan Martin del Potro due to a wrist injury, he is most favored to win the tournament.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion has made the finals of the tournament 10 times, winning the last one in 2011 against Kei Nishikori, who withdrew prior to the event, and coming in second last year.

Also competing in the event are Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic and recent Stockholm Open runner-up Grigor Dimitrov.

Both Raonic and Dimitrov are participating in the tournament in order to get some valuable points in the Race to London.

The Bulgarian star is currently in 11th place while the 23-year-old Canadian is 10th in the eight-man short list of the year-ending ATP World Tour Finals.

Raonic failed to accumulate points at the recently concluded Kremlin Cup in Moscow where he was top seeded and lost his opening match against Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankins.

The CITI Open champion Raonic was in eighth place prior to the event in Russia but slid after Andy Murray and David Ferrer both made it into the finals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

Dimitrov on the other hand, who won three ATP Tour titles this year, is 195 points behind Raonic and is still in contention for London this coming November.
