Wisconsin Shuts Down Wolf Hunting Zones, Two More Open

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has closed a total of three wolf hunting zones from Sunday to Monday after setting the maximum kill number to only 150 this year. Only two zones will be left open to the hunters.

Wisconsin is known for allowing a short hunting and trapping season of gray wolves, which have been removed from the list of federally protcted animals. In most states, killing of the wolves is still illegal.

Wisconsin is one of the few states that have attempted to sponsor annual hunting programs. But wildlife organizations protested against the plan negating that the number of the grey wolves are not enough for a hunting season to take effect.

According to officials figures, there have been a total of 85 wolves that have been killed as of October. There are only around 700 to 800 of the grey wolf in the area, and monitoring is keen as the numbers should not be relatively low.

DNR officials in Wisconsin have also uploaded their rules and regulations on  wolf hunting on their website.

Michigan also offers the same plan but it has been stopped after scientists noted that the grey wolf population in the state has been going down for the second year now.
