After 100 years, the journal of the photographer of Robert Falcon Scott's unsuccessful Antarctic expedition has been discovered, reported the Antarctic Heritage Trust in New Zealand.

The notebook is called Wellcome Photographic Exposure Record and Diary 1910.

It contains the opinions, comments and Cape Adare photos of George Murray Levick, a photographer, zoologist and surgeon who accompanied Scott in the 1910 British Antarctic Terra Nova Expedition.

It was found outside Scott's Terra Nova base during last summer's ice melt.

The notebook is still easy to read, and Levick's name is still visible on the opening pages. The binding, however, rotted away due to ice and water damage.

"The notebook is a missing part of the official expedition record. After spending seven years conserving Scott's last expedition building and collection, we are delighted to still be finding new artifacts," said Nigel Watson, executive director of the New Zealand-based Antarctic Heritage Trust.

The diary was taken to New Zealand. Each historic page will be restored carefully, and given new and proper binding.

As one of the six-man Northern Party, Levick spent a harsh winter in Cape Adare in 1911 and 1912. He and his colleagues survived the 1912 winter in an ice cave.

They did scientific observations but were stranded at their base camp because of pack ice that prevented their ship from fetching them.

Levick's group survived by living in an ice cave and eating local wildlife like seals and penguins.

Once the photographic diary is restored, it will be returned to Antarctica where it properly belongs. It will be included in the more than 11,000 objects found over the years from different expedition exploring the continent.
