A Chinese government official is under investigation after anti-corruption investigators seized $33 million in cash in his home in May.

The seizure was the largest haul so far since President Xi Jinping declared war on corruption two years ago.

Wei Pengyuan, a senior energy official in the government has been arrested and under investigation for corruption.

Prosecutors said that the stash amounted to more than 200m yuan (£20m) as four counting machines out of 16 broke down while counting the money.

The large haul first  reported in the China media last May was confirmed by anti-bribery prosecutor Xu Jinhui.

Wei was the deputy chief of the energy administration's coal agency when he was accused of taking bribes. The discovery of the hidden cash in his home bolstered China's suspicion that Wei was into corruption.

More than 13,000 government officials have been incarcerated and sentenced to years in prison for corruption and bribery in the first nine months of 2014 alone.

President Xi said the government will not relent in its anti-corruption campaign, mostly targeting "tigers" and "flies." Xi said his declaration on war against corruption will redound to the benefit of the Party and redeem the glory of China again

The President said the anti-corruption campaign is working although China has yet to catch the economic fugitives who have sought refuge in other countries.

Xi said the outcome of the campaign is satisfactory but he urged citizens to report any official misconduct to the government through hotlines and websites set up by the government.

He said the crackdown will spare no one, not even senior members of the Communist Party.

Since he assumed office, Xi has taken down high-ranking officials from the party due to corruption. Among the officials are the chief of China's parliament and a security chief.

Earlier reports said the high rate of suicide among the government officials being investigated for corruption was "alarming."
