Apple Orders 30 MIllion Chips for Apple Watch

(Photo : Reuters) Apple has reportedly ordered 30 to 40 million chips from key suppliers, all for the Apple Watch.

The mobile industry still shadows wearables, but Apple wants to change that as the Cupertino, Calif.-based company has ordered between 30 million and 40 million SiP S1 chips for its Apple Watch smartwatch.

By comparison, the highest sales recorded for a smartwatch appears to be Samsung's Galaxy Gear, selling just over 1 million units. This means Apple is looking to hit it out of the park with the Apple Watch sales.

Apple's suppliers include different factories from China and Taiwan, which will build the S1 chip. Apple did not reveal much about the chip, other than it is "industry first" and offers all the computation in one single chip, removing a lot of the size.

Most of the Apple Watch's internals remain a mystery, apart from the Taptic Engine. Apple will be adding a lot of sensors onto its smartwatch, to make it appealing to health and fitness geeks.

The device is rumored to support itself and work with an iPhone, this would be a big change from Android Wear, which cannot perform tasks without a paired smartphone. Apple will most likely still push users to pair the iPhone to the Apple Watch.

Apple is aiming to make the Apple Watch a key product, similar to the iPhone and iPad. In order to do that, they need a good marketing run in 2015 to interest millions of buyers worldwide, alongside a change in the wearables market, to draw more buyers in.

The stock price changes dramatically for Apple depending on how well its products do in the first few weeks, meaning if Apple cannot surpass demand for the smartwatch when it launches in Spring 2015, it might drop Apple's valuation by a few billion dollars.
