Johnny Depp's Drunken Speech Stirs Hollywood Awards Night

Hollywood A-lister Johnny Depp's speech has become the highlight of the evening as he slurred and cursed his way while introducing "Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon" at the 18th Hollywood Film Awards Friday.

The 2014 edition of the Hollywood Film Awards has taken an odd turn with several stars making a spectacle of themselves either while blurting out their acceptance speech or introducing the awardees.

Depp's speech, however, obviously grabbed the most attention as social media immediately exploded with tweets as soon as the actor was done fumbling with introductory notes on Supermensch, a documentary directed by actor Mike Myers as a tribute to Shep Gordon, the American talent manager and film agent who spent his life making other people famous.

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" superstar staggered on stage toward the two-headed microphone, which he described as the 'weirdest microphone he has ever seen in his life', and later wrestling with it in what looked like an attempt to straighten it up.

Afterwards, while scratching his head and tilting to his right, he admitted to the crowd, "I'm not very good at this type of thing," laughing as added  that he'll just read his speech.

Depp then paused midway, mumbling, "What does that say?" as he was having a difficult time reading what's on the autocue. Further into his speech, the actor, also known for his bizarre roles in films, cursed out loud. Realizing his mistake, he covered his mouth and continued on with his speech.

Despite that, he seemed to have elicited laughter among the audience.

Director Mike Myers, who was backstage at that time, told reporters that Depp's introduction was "very rock 'n roll".

Meanwhile, Ben Affleck, who received an award for his most recent film 'Gone Girl', also goofed around on stage by talking about the nude scenes in the film, while his ex-girl Jennifer Lopez mispronounced the title of 'How to Train Your Dragon 2', saying 'How to Drain Your Dragon 2', causing the audience to burst into laughter.

Gerard Butler, who was the recipient of the award that J. Lo presented, couldn't help pouncing on the singer, saying, "Thank you, Jennifer, for the flawless introduction," followed by a grin.

The host of the show, Queen Latifah,  also teased Steve Carell about losing his virginity on prom night, citing that not many movie enthusiasts know about the awards ceremony since it hasn't been televised in the last 17 years.

"That's the problem when the event isn't on television," said Queen Latifah. "But that changes tonight."

Jack O'Connell also thanked Angelina Jolie, referring to her as his 'boss' while he was accepting the New Hollywood Award for 'Unbroken', later dedicating it to Louis Zamperini who was the subject of the film.

The 18th Hollywood Film Awards ended on a good note, nonetheless, and will likely pave the way for an odd race for the Oscars.
