Republicans Might Have Violated Election Laws During 2014 Midterms, Twitter Used To Announce Clues

Republicans may have violated election laws during the recent 2014 midterm elections by sharing internal polling data ahead of the actual voting, a CNN report said.

The report entitled "How The Grand Old Party (GOP) used Twitter to stretch election laws" explained how Republicans conspired with outside groups in order to evade the campaign finance laws using Twitter.

Republicans and Political Action Committees (PACs) have been using Twitter to do the above-mentioned act and questions have now surfaced if there is a law prohibited in using the social media to do such, CNN stated.

Anonymous Twitter accounts such as @TruthTrain14 and @brunogianelli44 were used and set up months before the midterm elections to push for the use of "soft money" to fund campaigns.

Inscrutable tweets were periodically tweeted and they reportedly contained internal polling data. These tweets signaled outside groups where they should use the money in different campaign resources, CNN explained.

One tweet was pulled out and it says, "@truthtrain14 FL-44/42-44/44-35/35-42/41-49/47-10/22/14-26". It was reported that it was decoded as outlining the poll results from a House race in Florida back in October 22 in District 26.

The said Twitter accounts were live until November 3 but were deleted minutes after the National Republican Congressional Committee were questioned about the existence of such accounts on the social networking site.

It has also been found out that there were at least two outside groups and a campaign committee set up by the Republicans who had access to the said accounts. These groups include the American Crossroads, American Action Network and the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The GOP might have violated the laws since according to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), outside groups such as PACs and non-profit groups are allowed to spend unlimited funds regarding political causes but they cannot coordinate with the campaigns.

The tweets are allegedly communication tools between the Republicans and the outside groups.

This is not the first time that such case has happened. In April this year, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee's official Twitter accounts posted a couple of messages which were later use in the ads of the Democratic PACs.
