China Accounts for One-Third of All International Students in U.S.

The report shows that there were a total of 886,052 international students enrolled in U.S. universities and colleges during the 2013-2014 academic year.

More than 273,000 Chinese students from mainland China alone were enrolled in the U.S., which translaties to a 16.5 increase over the previous year and accounting for 31 percent of all international students.

And if you add in areas such as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, that figure increases to 304,361 - making up more than 34 percent of all international students in the U.S. It is also five times more Chinese students than was recorded on International Education Exchange 2000, according to ChinaDaily.

Furthermore, the IIE believes the new agreements between China and the U.S., which would allow student visas to be valid for five years instead of just one year, will lead to continued growth among the Chinese student population in the U.S.

"It will help a lot in making it easier for students to come to the United States, knowing that they can go home for vacations and holidays and come back without the need to renew their visas," Peggy Blumenthal, senior counsel to the president of IIE said. "It's a step to remove what could be a psychological barrier".

Although China is dominating the top five places of origin for international students in the U.S., India is the second major source followed by South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Canada.
