Extreme Weather Conditions are the “New Climate Normal”

Too much snow

Scientists warn extreme weather events will eventually become the "new climate normal" because of global warming.

It means there will be more heat waves, more super snowstorms and other extreme weather that will cause huge environment problems, said a World Bank Group report.

The World Bank is spending heavily on clean energy in a bid to mitigate climate change. World Bank President Jim Yong Kim will speak about issue at a UN climate summit in Peru in December.

"The findings are alarming. As the planet warms further, heat waves and other weather extremes, which today we call onceina-century events, would become the new climate normal, a frightening world of increased risk and instability. The consequences for development would be severe, as crop yields decline, water resources shift, communicable diseases move into new geographical ranges, and sea levels rise," said Kim.

The appalling weather already affecting millions of people worldwide.

Buffalo, New York, was blanketed by more than five feet of snow fell while New Yorkers experienced heavy snow that will turn into raging floods when it thaws.

"We know that the dramatic weather extremes are already affecting millions of people, such as the five to six feet of snow that just fell on Buffalo, and can throw our lives into disarray or worse. Even with ambitious mitigation, warming close to 1.5C above preindustrial levels is locked in. And this means that climate change impact such as extreme heat events may now be simply unavoidable," he added.

Kim proposes the moving of resources toward renewable and cleaner forms of energy. He believes the poorest countries have a right to energy and there are ways of ensuring there will be solar and wind power these countries can use.

Kim is asking world leaders to take an aggressive approach towards reducing climate change.

"Leaders must step up and take the necessary decisions on how we manage our economies towards clean growth and resilient development," Kim concluded.
