New research reveals the science behind why cats drink water expertly as opposed to dogs that slosh and spill water as they drink, bringing context to the phrase "cats rule and dogs drool".

Initially focused on dogs, the study also discovered the process by which cats drink. Humans close their cheeks tightly, an ability neither cats nor dogs possess. But how do cats and dogs drink?

In 2010, engineers at Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discovered how cats drink water. A feline apparently touches its tongue to the water's surface and pulls up a liquid column at a speed of three feet per second. As gravity pulls the water down, a cat immediately slams its mouth shut over the water at four times per second.

Engineers are now studying how dogs drink. The current belief is dogs use the same technique as cast. The new research shows this isn't the case. Dogs just smash and slurp water, splashing it far and wide. Dogs create a force that splashes water at up to eight times gravity.

Cats tongues also hold clues about why this technique is more effective than that used by dogs. Cats' tongues don't touch the water; only the tip of its tongue does. On the other hand, dogs use a large area of their tongues to slap and splash water, making them sloppy yet adorable drinkers.
