Major League Baseball's (MLB) Arizona Diamondbacks are close to signing Cuban free agent and coveted outfielder Yasmany Tomas.

According to a report from MLB.com, it indicated that the team and Tomas had agreed to a six-year deal worth US $68.5 million last Wednesday afternoon. Several other news avenues have also reported the same.

However, Diamondbacks General Manager Dave Stewart said through a text message that the deal is not yet done and that anything can still happen--with the deal possibly falling apart for any number of reasons.

Two weeks ago, the Diamondbacks have been expressing some mild interest in Tomas but hanging in the background. At the time, teams like the Phillies, Braves, and Padres were also involved.

In the last few days though, the Diamondback's interest in the 24-year old Cuban free agent has intensified.

"We've talked to his people," Stewart said. "We understand the parameters in which they all work under. We're sitting here internally trying to figure out what we want to do and if we can be a part of the negotiation."

While Stewart, Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations De Jon Watson and top scout Mike Russell have not yet met with Tomas, the three big-wigs have seen him in training at the Dominican Republic.

Stewart said that they saw him in the outfield and some infield ground balls at third base.

Most other teams interested in him see his position at third base, but Stewart counters that he would be good as an outfielder as it is his position of experience.

The deal is reported to include an opt-out clause. While there are no details about how the clause could be used, Tomas indicated that the Diamondbacks are much more interested in a long-term deal with a lower average annual salary.
