No Hot Espresso for ISS Crew Until April 2015

ISSpresso

Argotec and Lavazza are bringing authentic Italian espresso onto the International Space Station.

The International Space Station crew will apparently have to wait a few more months before they get to sip piping hot coffee in zero gravity.

This arrival of a space espresso machine aptly called the ISSpresso has been delayed until April 2015 because of other complications. ISSpresso is designed to work in microgravity.

Developed by aerospace company, Argotec, and famed Italian coffee brewers Lavazza, the espresso machine was to have arrived last month along with first Italian female astronaut, Samantha Cristoforetti.

Liquid water in space forms liquid globules that will float around the ISS and destroy sensitive scientific instruments and equipment. This is why water in unsealed containers is prohibited on the ISS.

ISSpresso, however, will keep water tightly shut inside it. The machine will fill special pouches with coffee and an astronaut can enjoy his brew by sipping it from a straw.

ISSpresso not only churns out good coffee but also heats and stores water astronauts can use to re-hydrate food. It can also cook seven types of soup and also brew tea.

The espresso machine's myriad functions will prove extremely useful for astronauts who subsist on a diet of freeze dried and specially prepared food.

Astronauts still drink instant coffee on the ISS. When ISSPresso arrives, it will also undergo a battery of tests to prove it functions well in microgravity before the crew can relish their freshly brewed coffee in space.
