Co-anchor of America's News HQ Gregg Jarrett was arrested after release from rehab in an airport bar in Minneapolis in Wednesday afternoon, authorities report.

According to the official police report, the Los Angeles-born Jarrett was in the Northern Lights Grill at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport when he was arrested as drunk and disorderly. He wouldn't listen to orders, appeared agitated, confused and "acted belligerently" police say.

According to documents in Jarrett's possession, he had just been released from rehab earlier that day.

Jarrett admitted to having been drinking vodka for three hours straight and although initially denying it, he eventually admitted to taking prescription drugs as well. Three pills were found in his possession and identified as Gabapentin, prescription medication commonly used to treat bipolar disorder.

He was placed in a holding cell, where he refused to cooperate with police officers who were attempting to handcuff him, allegedly yelling "f**k you" and verbally berating police officers.

Jarrett was charged with interfering with a peace officer, a misdemeanour offence, and was released from custody 1:30 a.m. on Thursday after posting the $300 US bail.

This behaviour follows Jarrett's temporary leave of absence from the Fox News show America's News HQ, starting May 12. The reported reason was "personal" according to official statements from Fox.

A member of Fox News since 2002, the 59 year-old was a weekend newscast co-anchor as well as substitute anchor for America's Newsroom, Happening Now and Studio B. Over the past months, Jarrett had been observed as having slurred speech while on air and frequently appeared in varying moods and stages of irritability.

One notable broadcast in April had the veteran news anchor walk off the set and not return.

Following the arrest, a spokesperson for Fox News noted that Jarrett, married and father of two, had been dealing with serious personal issues for some time but declined to go in any further detail.

Jarrett had a background in law, having earned a law degree from the University of California in 1980, worked as a defense attorney in San Francisco and taught law at the New York Law School.

In later years, he served as a legal analyst for the Fox Business Network. Prior to Fox, Jarrett had been a reporter for several local news stations in California, Kansas, North Carolina and Maryland.

Following an Emmy-winning video for newscasting, Jarrett began as an anchor and correspondent with MSNBC and Court TV. Notably, he was anchoring for MSNBC when the World Trade Center attacks occurred on the morning of September 11, 2001.

Jarrett's court appearance is tentatively dated to be June 6.
