Meteorite Reveals Proof of Life on Mars

The Red Planet

(Photo : Reuters ) Mars continues to astonish scientists.

A new study claims the Tissint meteorite that smashed into the Earth in July 2011 may contain proof of life on Mars.

Researchers found some organic carbon inside the meteorite probably formed by biological processes. They've confirmed the piece of rock is from Mars.

This particular meteorite was among some 61 meteorites from Mars that rained on Earth as part of a meteor shower in 2011. The event occurred over the region of the Oued Drâa valley, eastern Tata, Morocco and observers saw a bright fireball in the sky on July 18, 2011.

Witnesses said the fireball turned from yellow to a luminous green before it split into two. Loud sonic booms were heard across the valley. Some locals came across the meteorites in October.

Researchers determined the Tissint meteorite was ejected from Mars some 700,000 years ago. They also believe the meteorite was formed around 400 to 500 million years ago.

The research team led by Yangting Lin from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing argued that the organic carbon in the meteorite may have come from Mars.

The meteorites found by Moroccans were described as black glass. Researchers said this was caused by extreme temperatures that melted the rocks, a process that couldn't have occurred in only three months.

Researchers say the meteorite possesses carbon similar to diamond's structure. The results of the findings conclude the carbon in the Tissint meteorite was formed via biological processes and not due to environmental factors, said Lin.

This research was published in the journal, Meteoritcs & Planetary Science.
